The Complete Core Virtues Program and Resource Guide:
by Mary Beth Klee
A literature-based program in character education
for the K-6 grade levels.
The Core Virtues program is a practical, non-sectarian approach to character education on the Kindergarten to sixth grade levels.
This literature-based program has as its goal the cultivation of character through the promotion of basic moral, civic, and intellectual virtues. It emphasizes such “core virtues” as: respect, responsibility, diligence, honesty, generosity, perseverance, courage, faithfulness, compassion, openness to inquiry, and humility in the face of facts. The program employs quality children’s literature to help children fall in love with the good, and to cultivate a vocabulary of virtue.
The virtues highlighted each month are common ground, consensus virtues and not controversial social or political agendas. The objective is to ignite the imagination of the young, inspiring them to do and be their best.
The book presents the complete program, which includes: an overview of the program’s philosophical and historical underpinnings, a strategy for implementation, a month-by-month sequence for teaching consensus virtues on a three year cycle; grade specific goals for kindergarten to sixth grade; reproducible definitions of the virtues keyed to various grade levels; and, most importantly, an extensive resource guide (bibliography) to quality children’s literature organized by virtue.

Notes From the Past
Clio and the Crossroads Chorus
A “Clio” website link from this page is being developed and will feature history-related materials developed by Dr. Klee, but in the meantime, teachers and students may enjoy this CD of original songs, initially developed to reinforce key points in the Core Knowledge history sequence. Words, tunes, and vocals mostly by Mary Beth Klee. Instrumentals and some vocal accompaniment are by Jacksonville-based performing artist, Dennis Klee. The brother and sister team of “Clio” will have your children shivering “Back in the Ice Age,” as well as “Babblin on in Babylon,” doing the “Ancient Greek Rock.” Eleven sung versions teach, and 11 instrumental tracks allow your child or children to be the stars for a karaoke version.
